Police Arrest UK Man In Connection With PSN and Xbox Live Hacks

18-year-old also arrested on suspicion of swatting offences; Ongoing international investigation continues.

An 18-year-old has been arrested as part of an international investigation into the Christmas Day PlayStation Network and Xbox Live DDoS attacks.

The man was arrested this morning in Southport, a seaside town based in Merseyside, England. He is being held on suspicion of unauthorized access to computer material, unauthorized access with intent to commit further offenses, and "threats to kill."
GameSpot has confirmed with the Thames Valley Police that the man was arrested in connection with the investigation into the PSN and Xbox Live attacks, as well as on suspicion of being involved with "swatting." Swatting is a criminal offense where people make phony emergency calls to the police in order to send armed police to their home.
The arrest was made as part of a joint effort between UK cybercrime authorities, including the South East Regional Organized Crime Unit and the National Cyber Crime Unit, and the FBI.
"We will pursue those who commit crime with the false perception they are protected within their own homes or hiding behind anonymous online personas" -- Peter Goodman
As part of the arrest, authorities seized numerous "electronic and digital devices" that will be examined by forensics units.
"This investigation is a good example of joint law enforcement cooperation in relation to a type of criminality that is not restricted by any geographical boundaries," SEROCU Cyber Crime Unit head Craig Jones said in a statement.
"We are still at the early stages of the investigation and there is still much work to be done. We will continue to work closely with the FBI to identify those to who commit offences and hold them to account."
Association of Police Officers cyber security lead Peter Goodman added: "This arrest demonstrates that we will pursue those who commit crime with the false perception they are protected within their own homes or hiding behind anonymous online personas."
Lizard Squad, the name for an online collective of hackers, is thought to be responsible for the PSN and Xbox Live outages, but this has not been proven. A reported member of the group was arrested earlier this month, though the charges were not related to the PSN and Xbox Live attacks.
Earlier this week, US President Barack Obama outlined a new legislative proposal aimed at thwarting DDos attacks.

Microsoft explains how exactly you can use game titles to describe your videos.

Microsoft has revised and clarified its recently updated Game Content Usage Rules, which tells people how they may use Microsoft's games to create content, specifically YouTube videos and Twitch streams.
The revision addresses some players' concerns regarding the Usage Rules portion, which was originally worded in such a way that made them think they can't use Microsoft game titles to describe their own videos.

Xbox Boss Says Windows 10 Could Be Best Microsoft OS Ever For PC Gamers

"We remain committed to gaming on console, but we know that we have fans and gamers that also play on PC and phone."

Microsoft's upcoming Windows 10 operating system could be the "best operating system we've ever created for gamers on PC," according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer. On the Xbox Wire, Spencer hyped theJanuary 21 Windows 10 event by saying he's really excited to finally get to showcase "the great work that we're doing" in the Windows 10 space as it relates to gaming.

"For the Xbox team, this is the beginning of our discussion with fans about the work that we're doing to bring gaming to the Windows 10 operating system," he said. "It's really nice to finally get to be able to talk about this. We'll continue the conversation throughout the year."
Microsoft may be investing more seriously into PC gaming, but don't expect this to come at the expense ofXbox One or the company's other console projects.

The UK and US are to carry out "war game" cyber attacks on each other as part of a new joint defence against online criminals.
The first exercise, a staged attack on the financial sector, will take place later this year, Downing Street said.
The "unprecedented" arrangement between the two countries was announced by Prime Minister David Cameron ahead of talks with US President Barack Obama.
The two men discussed a range of other issues, including counter-terrorism.
They are holding a press conference in the Oval Office of The White House after talks lasting about an hour.

Games Digital blames sales fall on Tough competition

Game Digital, the video games retailer, has blamed a "highly competitive Christmas trading period" for a drop in sales over the festive period.
The firm, previously known as Game Group, said group sales fell 6.7% in the 11 weeks to 10 January.
It said "increased promotional activity across the market" had driven up hardware sales, such as Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles, but at lower average selling prices and margin.
It expects flat full year earnings.
For the full financial year ending 1 August, it said underlying earnings would be "broadly in line" with 2014's total of £51.3m.
This was much lower than the £63.7m analysts had expected.
Despite the drop in sales, Game's chief executive Martyn Gibbs said the group was now "well placed" to capitalise on hardware sales.
"We now have a huge customer base...to sell both mint and pre-owned physical and digital content accessories to over the long term," he added.
Game, which relisted on the London Stock Exchange last year just two years after the firm collapsed into administration, announced the results after the stock market closed on Tuesday.

Rockstar re-confirms Grand Theft Auto V launch date

RSG GTAV NG Screenshot 143
Rockstar has taken the somewhat unusual step of re-confirming that the PC version ofGrand Theft Auto V will be released on January 27. But its response to nervous forum users may not be quite as unequivocal as everyone would like.
The statement came in reply to an incredibly succinct inquiry on the Rockstar forums about whether or not the game has been delayed. "GTAV will be coming to PC on January 27th," Rockstar wrote. "We have not announced any changes to the date at this time."
The first sentence is clear enough, but the second one comes off as somewhat squishier. It's almost certainly just the usual corporate-speak boilerplate—and yet Steam continues to list the game as launching in "Early 2015," despite January 27 being just 18 days away. The system requirements haven't been released yet, either. For a game we're meant to be playing in less than three weeks, that seems a little odd.
Which isn't to suggest that shenanigans are afoot: Rockstar has never been the most vocal studio in the world, and so while this might seem unusual, it's not terribly strange by the firm's standards. So January 27 it is—and we'll of course let you know if and when we hear different.

Windows 9 Will be Free for Windows 8 Users -- Report

The president of Microsoft Indonesia reportedly said that users who upgrade from Windows 8 to the rumored Windows 9, will be able to do so for free.

The Windows 8 home menu...which might see some big changes.
UPDATE: In a surprise move, Microsoft is skipping Windows 9 entirely and going straight to Windows 10. You can read the story on the new OS what its new features will be as it breaks right here.
The original story appears below
Windows 9 has not been officially announced, although we expect Microsoft to reveal the next version of their Windows operating system during a widely rumored press event scheduled for tomorrow, September 30. But in the meantime, the president of Microsoft Indonesia has reportedly spilled early details on an upgrade program for current Window 8 users. According to Indonesian site
Detik (via PCWorld), Andreas Diantoro confirmed that "Windows 9 will be a free upgrade for all Windows 8 users."
His full quote, translated by the handy but not entirely perfect Google Translate was: "Easy, when the OS (Windows 9) was launched later, users who have been using Windows 8 just need to do the update via his device. It will be installed automatically." He reportedly made this comment at the Hotel Mulia in Jakarta.
A US Microsoft representative said that they have nothing to share at this time. But we'll keep you updated on the further details as they're made available, as well as what this could mean for PC gaming. On a related note, Microsoft's Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, talked about renewing the company's focus on PC gaming earlier this year at E3.

Windows 10's New Browser Revealed

Microsoft's new Spartan browser said to be a radical overhaul of Internet Explorer.

With Microsoft's upcoming Windows 10 event now just two weeks away, a new report from The Vergeclaims to have lots of juicy details about the operating system's new, non-Internet Explorer browser, which we learned last month is currently codenamed Spartan, a reference to the Halo series.
Sources told the site that the browser will include a range of new features not found in rival browsers such as Google's Chrome or Mozilla's Firefox. One of the browser's biggest new features is the ability to annotate a webpage with a stylus, and then send those notes to a friend or colleague. It will reportedly be powered by the cloud-enabled OneDrive, meaning the notes can be accessed nearly anywhere.

French Google fund to pay for 1 million print run of Charlie Hebdo next week

Dips into €60m 'link tax' sweetener

Montage of front covers from Charlie Hebdo magazine
Money put into a fund by Google as a sweetener for French publishers during the link tax row of 2013will be used to pay for next week’s edition of Charlie Hebdo.
Following an attack by gunmen on the magazine's offices in Paris on Wednesday – in which 12 people were killed – the media world has come together to support the French satirical weekly. But it seems the firm that some see as publishers’ biggest foe is ultimately bankrolling next week’s edition.
Eight of the 12 people killed were journalists attending an editorial meeting, however, a senior editor and the magazine’s chief executive were in London at the time of the attack. They have vowed to do a massive 1 million copy print run next week – Charlie Hebdo’s circulation is normally around 60k.
The cash will come from €60m fund (€20m per year over three years) that supports digital publishing innovation. The fund was set up in 2013 following negotiations between Google and the French government as a remedy to demands from European publishers that Google pay for displaying news snippets in its search results.
The issue of whether Google should pay for re-publishing articles in its results has been controversial. Most recently a Spanish fix for the situation – obligatory payments from the Chocolate Factory, whether publishers want them or not – has seen Google close its Google News service in the country.
Europe’s new Digital Commissioner, Gunther H-Dot Oettinger, has said he favours some sort of Google tax, despite the Spanish outcome and its relative failure in Germany. With the attention it has gained this week, he may now consider the French approach.
Four of France’s most famous cartoonists – Cabu, Wolinski, Tignous and Charb (editor-in-chief Stephane Charbonnier) – were personally targeted and killed in the attack.
“This is an exceptional answer to an exceptional situation,” Ludovic Blécher, managing director of the fund, told El Reg. “I cannot confirm yet the amount of money, but we will be giving financial support toCharlie Hebdo.” ®

Why Marvel's 'Ant-Man' Trailer Was a Small, But Important, Misstep

The first look at the studio's non-'Avengers' 2015 release was surprisingly underwhelmingAnt-Man Trailer Screengrab - H 2015

The placement of the first trailer for Marvel's Ant-Man at the end of the broadcast of the first episode of Marvel's Agent Carter seemed, on first blush, to be something along the lines of self-counterprogramming: Wouldn't the excitement for Carter risk drowning out the excitement for Ant-Man? Upon watching the trailer, however, a secondary thought came to mind: Maybe that was the point.

The most surprising thing about the Ant-Man trailer — or the teaser, as Marvel is referring to it — isn't the sight of a man shrinking to minuscule size, nor Paul Rudd playing a superhero; instead, it was how unsurprising it was. Formally, it matches the Avengers: Age of Ultron teaser

Sony Pictures hackers 'got sloppy', FBI says

The US is confident that North Korea was behind the Sony Pictures cyber-attack last year because the hackers "got sloppy", the FBI has said.
The bureau's director James Comey said the group posted material from servers used exclusively by the North Koreans.
November's attack on the company saw the leak of sensitive documents, and film The Interview briefly shelved.
Cyber security experts have been sceptical about the FBI's assertion North Korea was to blame.
After Sony's decision to temporarily cancel the film's release was described by US President Barack Obama as "a mistake", Sony later released the film in independent cinemas and also distributed it online.
Proxy Use:-
The comedy's plot revolves around a plan to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Pyongyang has denied being behind the cyber-attack, but described it as a "righteous deed".
In retaliation, the US has placed sanctions on three North Korean organisations and 10 individuals.
The sanctions are believed to be the first time the US has moved to punish any country for cyber-attacks on a US company.

Mr Comey had been addressing delegates at the International Conference on Cyber Security in New York.
He said there was evidence the hackers had used proxy servers in an attempt to disguise the attack's origins, but sometimes neglected to do so, revealing, the FBI believes, the true location.
But experts remain unconvinced that the US has proved its case.
"To be frank, director Comey has not revealed anything new," said Brian Honan, a security researcher.
"Various IP addresses have been associated with this attack, from a hotel in Taiwan to IP addresses in Japan.
"Any IP address connected to the internet can be compromised and used by attackers."

Charlie Hebdo: Gun attack on French magazine kills 12

Video uploaded to YouTube shows the attackers fleeing after shooting a police officer
Gunmen have shot dead 12 people at the Paris office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in an apparent militant Islamist attack.
Four of the magazine's well-known cartoonists, including its editor, were among those killed, as well as two police officers.
A major police operation is under way to find three gunmen who fled by car.
President Francois Hollande said there was no doubt it had been a terrorist attack "of exceptional barbarity".
The masked attackers opened fire with assault rifles in the office and exchanged shots with police in the street outside before escaping by car. They later abandoned the car in Rue de Meaux, northern Paris, where they hijacked a second car.

Motorola heads back into China's smartphone market

Two Motorola employees tranfer data between two of Motorola's Moto X as the American-manufactured smartphone is unveiled August 1, 2013 at a news conference in New York.
Motorola's Moto X smartphone was first unveiled in 2013

Motorola has announced it will re-enter the Chinese smartphone market from February with at least three products.
China is one of the world's biggest and fastest growing smartphone markets.
Motorola's phone business had retreated from the mainland in 2013 after it came under Google's ownership.
However, in October last year, China's Lenovo completed the purchase of Motorola Mobility from Google, paving the way for the firm to re-enter the mainland's marketplace.
Motorola said three of its products would go on sale from early February, or after the Chinese New Year holiday season, including its Moto X, new Moto X Pro and new Moto G.

'Alien Earth' is among eight new far-off planets

Artist's impression of exoplanet
Artist's impression: Kepler has identified many exoplanets but few are within their star's "Goldilocks zone"

One of eight new planets spied in distant solar systems has usurped the title of "most Earth-like alien world", astronomers have said.
All eight were picked out by Nasa's Kepler space telescope, taking its tally of such "exoplanets" past 1,000.
But only three sit safely within the "habitable zone" of their host star - and one in particular is rocky, like Earth, as well as only slightly warmer.
The find was revealed at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

Origin packs desktop Core i7 CPUs into new EON17-X and EON15-X laptops

Origin 15x
Origin had a whole load of new gaming laptops to show off at CES this year. The svelte EVO15-S, which weighs only 4.3 pounds, has been upgraded with Nvidia’s latest 970M GPU. It’s damn light for a gaming laptop, and still feels sturdy. But Origin hasn’t done anything drastic with that system—it’s simply gotten a spec bump to stay current. The rest of its gaming laptop are a different story. Their most powerful laptop, the EON-17X, has gotten a chassis redesign to be thinner and lighter than the previous models. And both the EON-17X and its 15-inch cousin, the EON15-X, are running some brand new, serious hardware: GTX 980M graphics with 8GB of VRAM alongside desktop Intel Core i7 4790K processors.

Desktop processors. In gaming laptops. We don’t see that every day.
Origin says the EON17-X is about 37% thinner and 30% lighter than the previous model. It weighs 8.6 pounds, while the EON15-X weighs 7.5. The support for desktop CPUs is the big deal here. While the laptops start with more modest components configured on Origin’s store (the 2.9GHz Intel i5-4460S), they can be configured with beefy i5 4690Ks or i7 4790Ks. Go all the way, and Origin will even overclock the CPU to a full 4.4GHz, so all four cores are running at the i7’s normal turbo boost speed.
The EON17-X and 15-X also have room for two m.2 PCIe SSDs, with two standard storage bays for SATA SSDs/HDDs. The m.2 SSDs can be run in RAID via SATA, and the graphics choices are the 970M with 6GB of VRAM or the 980M with 8GB of VRAM. These are some serious machines. Running on battery, Origin says you’ll get about two hours of normal use or one hour of gaming. But these are hefty desktop replacement machines that you’ll likely always want to have plugged into the wall.
Eon17xopen
The 17-X and 15-X are about as user-serviceable as gaming laptops get. Memory and storage are obviously upgradeable, and the graphics cards are MXM, meaning they’ll be swappable with other GPUs down the line. Origin covers that upgrade under its warranty, if you’re squeamish about doing it yourself. The best part is that you can change out that desktop CPU, too. The laptops use the standard Intel LGA1150 socket, so any future CPU on that platform will be interchangeable. That’s pretty cool.
While desktop CPUs are significantly more powerful than Intel’s best mobile CPUs usually found in gaming laptops, you’re not going to need that extra power for most games unless you’re multitasking. For video editing or other seriously CPU-intensive tasks, though, this is a real step up from a mobile i7 CPU.
The Origin EON15-X starts at $1842 with a desktop CPU on Origin’s site, while the 17-X is a touch more at $1878. Both are available to customize and order as of today.
The New ORIGIN PC EON15-S starts at $1,837. It’s a smaller system than the 15-X (5.5 pounds compared to 7.5) and doesn’t use desktop parts. Still, it can run the Intel i7-4720HQ CPU, the Nvidia 980M GPU and has two slots for m.2 PCIe SSDs. It also got a redesign from its previous model, shaving off 25% of its weight.

WWE Network Finally Coming to the UK

Pro wrestling firm WWE has offered what it claims is a final release date for the UK version of the WWE Network.
The online video subscription service, which offers access to a vast thirty-year archive of wrestling shows, as well as live streams of the latest pay-per-views, was due to come to Britain and Northern Ireland in November but failed to materialize.
Now, in a video announcement from the corporation's chief executive Vince McMahon (above), the WWE Network has been earmarked for UK release on Monday January 19.
"This time we really mean it," McMahon said. "You've been waiting a long time for the WWE Network and we thank you for your patience."
The Network will cost £9.99 per month, and is accessible on games consoles such asPlayStation 4Xbox OnePlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Video games should be in Olympics, says Warcraft maker

E-sports competition
Competitive video gaming - known as e-sports - should be included in the Olympic Games, the creator of World of Warcraft has told the BBC.
Rob Pardo, who until July was chief creative officer at Blizzard Entertainment, said "sport" now had a broad definition.
"Video games are well positioned to be a spectator sport," he told Afternoon Edition on BBC 5live.
Professional e-sports events currently attract audiences of millions.
A recent major final held in Seoul, South Korea, filled a stadium of 40,000 people - with many more watching either online or at meet-ups around the world.
"There's a very good argument for e-sports being in the Olympics," said Mr Pardo, who was also lead designer on Starcraft: Brood War, a game often credited with kickstarting the e-sports phenomenon.
E-sports crowd goes wildMillions watch the most popular games, both at stadium-sized events and online
"I think the way that you look at e-sports is that it's a very competitive skillset and you look at these professional gamers and the reflexes are lightning quick and they're having to make very quick decisions on the fly.
"When you look at their 'actions per minute', they're clearing over 300."
However, he conceded that video gaming faced a cultural battle to win over those who followed more physical sports.
"That starts getting into how you define sport," he said.
"If you want to define sport as something that takes a lot of physical exertion, then it's hard to argue that video games should be a sport, but at the same time, when I'm looking at things that are already in the Olympics, I start questioning the definition."
'Mind sport'
Having new sports admitted into the Olympic roster is a long-winded process and, since the International Olympic Committee (IOC) capped the number of sports allowed in the Games, has become increasingly difficult.
Even if e-sports were to be recognised as an Olympic sport, that does not mean they would be included in the Games - it merely means a case can be presented to the IOC.
Thousands turned up for the League of Legends World Championship in Seoul
Take chess, for instance. Supporters of the game have long called for its inclusion the Games, but the IOC has been reluctant, considering it a "mind sport" and therefore not welcome in the Games.
Video games face the same hurdle, but have done their best to at least act like a sport, by adding measures such as an anti-doping programme.
Mr Pardo argues that e-sports could be visually appealing to a broad audience.
"You can do whatever you want with the graphics, you can make it be really exciting and competitive," he said

Tail of Missing AirAsia Plane Is Found, Indonesian Official Says

t

JAKARTA, INDONESIA:  The head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency said Wednesday that the tail of AirAsia Flight 8501 had been spotted in the Java Sea, a development that could be significant because the plane's so-called black boxes were contained there.

"The tail section has been found and confirmed," the official, Bambang Soelistyo, said at a news conference.

Tail of Missing AirAsia Plane Is Found, Indonesian Official SaysHe said that the object was identified by sonar early Wednesday and that navy divers and a remote-controlled underwater vehicle had been deployed to confirm the discovery. The team took a photograph of what Soelistyo said was part of the tail, and it was broadcast on national television.

Flight 8501, an Airbus A320-200, crashed into the Java Sea on Dec. 28 with 162 people aboard, less than an hour after taking off from the Indonesian city of Surabaya bound for Singapore. Bad weather has slowed the process of identifying wreckage and recovering bodies.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, and officials hope that recovering the plane's voice and flight data recorders, or black boxes, will shed light on what happened.

ISRO gears up to launch satellite IRNSS 1D

After completing an eventful year, ISRO is gearing up for some satellite launches this year, with the IRNSS 1D being the first, which would put in place India's own navigation system on par with the Global Positioning System of the US.
"The launch campaign for IRNSS 1D has come, which starts on January 16. Within two months, all components from other ISRO labs have to reach Sriharikota. The launch is likely after March 15," a senior ISRO official said. IRNSS 1D is the fourth in the series of seven satellites, the nationalspace agency is planning to launch to put in place the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).
While four satellites would be sufficient to start operations of the system, the remaining three satellites would make it more accurate and efficient. The other launches also relate to the IRNSS series with the IRNSS1E and IRNSS1-F satellites to be launched before the year end, he said. The first three satellites in the IRNSS series were launched from Sriharikota on July 1, 2013, April 4 and October 16, 2014 respectively.
